98.5 Sonshine FM's
98.5 Sonshine FM's new premises at ComoFrom 98.5 Sonshine FM

The move to Como which will be completed by November 7th is a major plank in building a sustainable future for 98.5 Sonshine FM.

In 1996 General Manager Barry Grosser felt moved to write a 'faith cheque' for $750,000.  The purpose was to remove the burden of debt 98.5 Sonshine FM had carried since 1988 and to have $100,000 to refurbish the building. Six years ago Barry again felt the Lord was impressing on him the need to be debt free.  He shared this with the Board of the organization and they affirmed that sense.

The Como idea had originally been looked at a dozen years or so earlier but put to one side.  As a result of the new impetus the proposition was again explored with the leadership of South Perth Church of Christ and the membership graciously agreed.

A draft lease was drawn up and submitted to the Department of Land and Infrastructure for a sub lease of 3,000 square metres on the Crown land grant South Perth Church of Christ had been given in 1988 - the same year 98.5 Sonshine FM began on air.  The draft was signed and returned in 10 days.  It was then submitted to the Minister and returned signed in 14 days in May 2004!  The Board believed this to be a confirmation.

The existing building was sold and a three year 'Building our Future' fundraising program undertaken with three Radiothons and accompanying donor program.  The Radiothons raised over $800,000 and were a very clear indication of God's blessing on the project!  These Radiothon's exceeded anything previously seen.

The brickwork commenced in January this year and the building is now complete months ahead of schedule.  We praise God for our builder Ray Fewster of Fewster and Stone who together with his team have made the journey a joy!

The upshot is that God has more than honoured his promise with around $900,000 raised, a brand new building, debt free and to cap it off a $346,000 grant from Lotterywest (the WA Government's community funding arm), $240,000 of which is for building fit out and over $100,000 for a fully equipped outside broadcast van and garage to house it in!

Compassion Australia's Marketing Director, Natalie Moses said: "The atmosphere in the office was vibrant. We had excellent promotion on air and a superb team taking calls throughout the day. We know that many radio station staff and volunteers worked tirelessly around the clock to bring Compassion Day 08 to life; it is their hard work and commitment that makes Compassion Day so successful. We are in awe of God's faithfulness. Again, He has shown how much He wants to bless the world's children through this unique Christian media partnership."

The 1200 sponsorships pledged by listeners in response to Compassion Day 08 will provide children living in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and other parts of the world, not only with the basic material things they need to survive, but also with opportunities and skills they need to help break the cycle of poverty and fulfill their God-given potential.

Compassion Day will be held again in May 09-celebrating its 10th anniversary.
